With the Mets down 3 games to 1 heading into game 5 of the World Series, Met fans were optimistic that they could pull out a win. Game 5 was at home in Queens and they were sending Matt Harvey to the mound. Harvey was dominant locating his pitches and touching upper 90’s with his fastball. He kept Royal hitters off balance all night.
In the bottom of the 1st, Curtis Granderson got things started for New York with a solo home run, his 3rd of the series, to put the Mets up 1-0 early. Harvey continued to cruise striking out batter after batter. In the 6th, Lucas Duda tacked on another run for the Mets with a sacrifice fly to center scoring Granderson. With the Mets now up 2-0 and Harvey dominating, fans sensed the Mets were heading back to Kansas City for game 6. Until the game reached the 9th inning.
Mets manager Terry Collins was faced with a tough task. Does he send Harvey out for the 9th despite a 102 pitch count or does he turn the game over to Jeurys Familia who had already blown 2 games in the series? Collins ultimately let Harvey go out for the 9th and things got out of hand fast. Just 3 outs away from sending the series back to Kansas City, Harvey started the 9th with a lead off walk to Lorenzo Cain. Cain then proceeded to steal second base. Eric Hosmer, the following batter then doubled scoring Cain. With the score now 2-1 and no outs recorded in the 9th, Collins then turned to Familia to relieve Harvey. Famila had Moustakas ground out to first but Hosmer advanced to 3rd. With 1 out in the inning, the tying run was on third base. Salvador Perez grounded out to third but Hosmer was able to score on an errant throw by Lucas Duda throwing home. The game was now tied and the Mets had a new ball game ahead of them.
The game ultimately went to 12 innings and the Royals blew it wide open going up 7-2 and they never looked back. The Mets had the game right where they wanted it but ultimately could not hold on. The team however is young and should be a contender once again in 2016. However, it will be interesting to see who they are able to bring back.
